Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and it was declared a national park on April 8, 1949. The process of tufa formation, which forms barriers and thus creates lakes, is the outstanding universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, on October 26, 1979. 


The Plitvice Lakes system consists of 16 named and numerous smaller, cascading lakes. Due to the geological background and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system is divided into the Upper and Lower Lakes. Paklenica National Park
Due to its unique natural features, magnificent forests and extraordinary geomorphologic structures, the area of Velika and Mala Paklenica was proclaimed a national park in 1949. The main reason for proclaiming this area a national park was the protection of the largest and best-preserved forest complex in the territory of Dalmatia, which was threatened by overexploitation.  The Paklenica National Park on the area of 95 km2, and includes the highest peaks of the Velebit Mountain - Vaganski vrh (1752 m a.s.l.) and Sveto brdo (1753 m a.s.l.).
It covers the area of torrent flows of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica, and their distinctive canyons carved vertically into the southern slopes of the Velebit Mountain as well as their surrounding area. The relatively small area has an abundance of geomorphological phenomena and forms, diverse flora and fauna, attractive landscapes and intact nature. Different habitats in the area of Paklenica National Park, along with elevation stratification, provide an important home for diverse flora and fauna.    


Distinctive features of Paklenica National Park are autochthonous forests of Black Pine, several types of Beech forests and deep canyons with torrent flows of Velika and Mala Paklenica. Within the Paklenica National Park borders there are numerous testaments of interesting and unique cultural heritage.

The name Paklenica probably derives from Black Pine sap called “paklina”, which the locals used in traditional medicine, for wound treatment, for light, and for coating wooden boats.

Northern Velebit National Park

Established in 1999, Northern Velebit is the youngest of eight national parks in Croatia. This part of the Velebit Mountain is a true patchwork of the most diverse habitats that are home to countless plant, fungus and animal species – a wealth that is yet to be explored in its entirety. It is this diversity of karst forms, wildlife and landscape, to a large extent created by man, which was the main reason for setting up the Northern Velebit National Park.

Northern Velebit National Park encompasses several areas protected earlier: Hajdučki i Rožanski Kukovi, strict reserve, the Visibaba botanical reserve – home to the endemic species Croatian sibirea (Sibirea altaiensis ssp. croatica), and the Zavižan-Balinovac-Velika kosa botanical reserve which houses the well-known Velebit Botanical Garden, which has been listed as a monument of landscape architecture.

Northern Velebit National Park is member of the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) network, being the national winner in the category „Tourism and Protected Areas“ and has been included in the National Ecological Network Natura 2000.

The Primeval Beech Forest of the Northern Velebit National Park that grows inside the Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi Strict Reserve were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Brijuni National Park

Brijuni National Park is one of the eight national parks in the Republic of Croatia, consisting of 14 islands, islets and cliffs, located along the southwestern part of Istria. The Brijuni Islands were declared a national park and a memorial area on 1st November, 1983, with the first visitors arriving in April 1984. The archipelago is separated from the mainland by the Fažana Channel, where the two islands of the Brijuni archipelago, Sv. Jerolim and Kozada are located. Veliki and Mali Brijun are the largest islands, after which the National Park got its name. The other 10 islands are located on the west side of the waters are these in order from north to south: Sv. Marko, Gaz, Obljak, Supin, Supinić, Galija, Grunj, Vanga, Pusti otok and Vrsar.

The boundaries of the National Park were determined in 1999, and the total area of land and sea is 3,395ha. The sea forms almost 80% of the area, i.e. 2,651.70ha, while the land is 743.30ha. Most of the islands are not open to visitors in order to preserve the natural habitats and undisturbed co-existence of Brijuni’s flora and fauna.

Veliki Brijun is the largest island of the Brijuni archipelago with a 25.90km coastline and a total area of 561ha, which is 75% of the mainland of the park.

The Brijuni Islands are a cultural landscape and a protected cultural monument where natural and cultural elements intertwine; from tangible and intangible heritage, biological and cultural diversity, which ultimately result in the special character of the place. Due to its extremely rich natural and cultural heritage, valorisation is the basis for the preservation and future development of the archipelago, because it is the cultural level of a particular community evident in its landscape as a kind of cultural expression. The Public Institution NP Brijuni is an institution whose core business is the protection or preservation of original natural and landscape values.

 Krka National Park

Krka National Park is located in Šibenik-Knin County, and covers an area of 109 km² of the loveliest part of the Krka River and the lower course of the Čikola River. This area was proclaimed a national park due to the geomorphological, hydrological and landscape values, with tufa as the fundamental phenomenon. The plant and animal life of Krka National Park is both rich and diverse, with numerous endemic, rare and endangered species. Numerous cultural and historical monuments also lie within the Park boundaries, such as archaeological sites, medieval fortresses, ethnography, sacral heritage monuments, and industrial architecture monuments.

Skradinski buk waterfall, the longest tufa barrier in Europe, is the most famous and most visited waterfall on the Krka River. Its travertine barriers, islands and lakes form one of the most unusual and loveliest landscapes of Krka National Park.

The educational hiking trails and cycling routes throughout the Park provide visitors with a true experience of untouched nature and preserved cultural and historical monuments.
